One of the great things about my job is that from time to time I am able to publically acknowledge the many ways in which student learning is enhanced – someone has to do it!
The National Enterprise Educator Award I am presenting here to Neil Coles is sponsored by the HEA.
More information about Neil’s project ‘Enterprising Students at Cardiff University’ and the others on the shortlist will be included in future posts.

National Enterprise Educator Award 2013
As mentioned above I was delighted to present this award at the International Entrepreneurship Educators Conference (IEEC) Sheffield on Thursday 12 September. The winner was … Neil Coles and the Cardiff University Enterprise team. Based in the Student Union Neil and colleagues work across all disciplines to contextualise enterprise as well as provide support for start-ups.
Neil said “I’m overwhelmed to have received this Award from the enterprise education community. Thank you to NCEE, EEUK, HEA and all Cardiff University staff with whom I work. Enterprise educators often get our kicks from the student that starts a business or staff member that understands our agenda but I’m not sure we celebrate our ability to persuade, influence and deliver change enough. I was proud to be shortlisted and now thrilled to have won, but I’m just one person, from one fabulous team, who works within one extraordinary community!”
As you can see, once it started to sink in Neil and his team were very pleased!
Details of all four awards presented at IEEC are available this link.

Other
British Academy of Management doctoral symposium and annual conference
I enjoyed attending these events in Liverpool and Aintree and meeting colleagues from the UK and overseas. At both the symposium and in the professional development workshops there was quite a level of interest in teaching, learning and assessment and in the opportunity offered by some accredited university programmes to achieve Fellowship of the HEA.
On the opening day of the conference, the Richard Whipp Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to:
- Prof Karen Legge, Honorary Professor at Lancaster University Management School, and
- Prof Howard Thomas, who was Dean of Warwick Business School before becoming Dean of Lee Kong Chian School of Business at Singapore Management University.
Due to their outstanding Academic contribution to Business and Management scholarship and significant contribution to the community, Fellowship of the British Academy of Management was awarded to:
- Prof Nic Beech, St Andrews University;
- Prof Rick Delbridge, Cardiff University;
- Prof Sharon Mavin, Northumbria University;
- Prof Mary McHugh, University of Ulster;
- Prof Susan Vinnicombe OBE, Simmons College, Boston USA
International entrepreneurship educators conference
Above I mentioned one highlight of this conference, presenting the award to Neil Coles, and there are many others. This is a multi-disciplinary and multi-national conference which always has quite a buzz of excitement about it.
The programme was wide and appropriately included significant student involvement and contribution. Once again I enjoyed meeting many of you and discussing the HEA services and there was particular interest in the National Student Survey and the QAA guidelines on entrepreneurship.
The conference also gave me the opportunity to catch up with previous Enterprise Educator Award winners like Nigel Culkin (University of Hertfordshire) and Sue Poole (Gower College) and meet some of the others on the award shortlist including students and staff from Graeme High School, Falkirk.
My travel plans around the UK
During October I will be at meetings and events, including York St John (15th), Manchester Business School (16th); and Grimsby (22nd – see workshop above).
In November and December I will be heading for Birmingham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Newcastle, North London, North Wales, Plymouth, Sheffield and Sunderland, but not necessarily in that order! Let me know if you would like me to come and meet with you too.
